Phimosis surgery

Phimosis is a congenital or acquired contraction of foreskin opening that makes its retraction difficult or impossible. Less advanced cases of phimosis may be treated by conservative approaches. Surgical treatment of phimosis is practiced in boys after two years of age. Most commonly, procedures are performed in an outpatient setting.

Procedures performed as part of phimosis treatment may be classified, depending on medical qualifications, into two categories: plastic surgery of the foreskin or circumcision. In most cases, the procedure involves a plastic surgery widening the foreskin by means of special incisions. This is the less invasive of the two methods; however, it does not guarantee that the problem would not reappear, as postoperative scars may converge leading to recurring contraction of the foreskin.Less frequently, phimosis qualifies only for total or partial removal of the foreskin by means of circumcision. Circumcision is performed in case of severe scarring of the foreskin or upon parents' request. This method guarantees complete resolution of the problem.

In mildest cases, steroid ointments are used to eliminate inflammation and restore the foreskin function.
In all individual cases, the choice of the treatment method is left to the discretion of the physician. If possible, the urologist proposes both the best and the alternative treatment methods.
Both types of paediatric procedures are performed under general anaesthesia. A dressing allowing for urination is required on the penis after the surgery; swelling also persists for some time. Rehabilitation lasts about two weeks.
